Flashdance!
Nov. 1st, 2009 04:04 pmIt's been all about the flash fiction lately.
Following on the heels of "Dumping the Dead," my flash story "Mind Games" is scheduled to go up November 4 at Every Day Fiction.
And I just polished up the first draft of the story I started last Monday, which ended up surprising me on two counts: 1) it's flash fiction (I really thought I was going to write something longer), and 2) it's not fantasy.
I'm likely not remembering the details accurately, but the idea came from my brother-in-law talking about some expensive new restaurant that looked out on trees and a fountain, except the fountain pumped salt water and the spray ended up killing the trees. So I started mulling over the idea of people dining beside dead trees on purpose. While I don't know of an existing restaurant where people would do that, it doesn't seem too far beyond the realm of possibility, which is why the resulting story doesn't feel like the fantasy I thought it would end up being.
With that story done for now, it's on to revising chapter 7 of My Big Epic Fantasy Novel. In the meantime, I'll leave off with a snippet of what I've currently titled "Lunch with Dead Trees":
