The Writerly Update: Cheap Whore Edition

And there I went and fell off the face of the LJ planet for a bit again.  Well, actually, it wasn't so much falling off completely as it was grabbing the edge at the last second and hanging on with one hand until I was finally able to pull myself back up.  I have a feeling that's going to happen a lot in weeks to come.  It's like a I have a life or something, yeesh.

But you know what?  Three-day weekend, baby!  Of course, I'll be spending most of it curled up in my sunroom critiquing novel chapters and feeling guilty for passing my crud germs on to AsYouKnowBob.  But I get to sleep in, and that's the important part.

The Writerly Update
The good news: the novel rewrite really really wants me to work on it.  The bad news: the novel rewrite really really wants me to work on it.  It's great to have large amounts of enthusiasm and motivation during my writing time, but the pesky little bugger keeps pulling at my sleeve at inappropriate moments and asking, "Why do you love your day job more than me?"  And I have to tell it, "Actually, I love you far more than the day job, but you're not paying me."  At which point gainful employment manages to make me sound like a cheap whore.

Back from the dead

I'm back.  Sort of.  I'm liable to disappear again for blips of time, but I've actually had a chance to read and *gasp* comment on some LJ posts since yesterday.  The week or so before that, though...well, please do fill me in if I missed anything terribly exciting, like you just sold a novel or cured cancer or something.

TNEO Progress-O-Meter
I got the bulk of the Big Mass O' Research I needed to do for my TNEO lecture done, so that's a relief.  Now I just need to organize it all into a lecture, which is still work, but it's the easier part for me and less likely to make my eyes cross the way plowing through agent listings and websites and deal news did.

I'm not as far along on my TNEO critiquing as I was hoping to be by this point--one crit complete, *cough mumble cough cough* more to go.  But I've at least done a first read through of all of the first round novel chapters, and I have nowhere to be this weekend, so I intend to be a critiquing mad woman.  And, if the weather cooperates, bicycling will hopefully be on the menu as well.

The Writerly Update
Novel progress has been sloooooow.  Surprisingly so.  I was sure this chapter would go faster, but I forgot how much rewriting I needed to do in the opening scene.  Giving a character a complete personality transplant will do that.  But it all came together, just in time for me to kill the character off.  Official Big Fat Epic Fantasy Body Count: 5ish.  I say "ish" because a) I'm not counting some random guards and mercenary types who've bought it, and b) three of the five-ish were extremely minor characters, but I've decided that they count because walking into a room full of three bloodied dead folks was kind of a big deal for the not-dead folks.

And on that note, I seem to have caught another dang cold, so I need to get myself to bed.

The Writerly Update: Writers United for Longer Weekends Edition

No writing was accomplished over the weekend, which makes me cranky.  I demand a longer weekend.  Or more hours in the day.  Or the ability to freeze time.  And while I'm at it with the demands, where the hell is my jet pack?

As of this morning, I have one more scene left to rewrite in chapter 14, to which I say FINALLY.  The chapter was coming along so nicely, but then I apparently got stuck in some sort of weird time loop where I worked on the last few paragraphs of the penultimate scene for about a year.  Or at least that's what it felt like.

Hopefully I can crank out this last scene at a more reasonable pace and get to chapter 15, which was probably my favorite part of this novel to write the first time around.  Blood, murder, sex, political intrigue, manipulation, and torture...good times!

In the pre-rewrite version of this novel, I had really loooooong chapters.  I think one went on for about 16,000 words.  I've been breaking them into shorter chapters in the rewrite process.  So even though everything's taking place at about the same point it did in the original version, I find it amusing that what is now chapter 15 used to be chapter 5.

Oh, and I did finally come up with a tentative new title: Sons of Future's Choices.  Earlier today I looked at the title and thought, "Yeah, that'll work."  But when I typed it just now, it suddenly sounded like some sort of bad movie sequel, like Sons of Godzilla's Choices vs. Mothra.  I'm feeling a bit Gollum about this title, careening between "My precious, we wants it" and "We hates the evil, nasty titleses!"

In other writerly news...

Instead of planning a relaxing vacation like a normal person, I'm using one of the two furlough weeks we have to take at work to do The Never-Ending Odyssey, aka TNEO.  For the non-Odfellows reading, that's a week-long workshop during the summer for Odyssey Workshop grads. I'm doing the regular novel group instead of the short story group this year, and I was asked to lead one of the master class sessions, so I have a lot research and prep work to do for that.  I was in excited mode about all of this until Saturday when I printed out my first stack of chapters to critique.  My brain took one look at that pile and went a bit drama queen on me.

Drama queen antics under the cut ... )

The Writerly Update: This-Weather-Is-Friggin-Awesome Edition

It annoys me greatly to have been stuck in an office for most of this week instead of being able to sit home in my sunroom enjoying the weather and all the pretty blooming things.  I need to figure out a way to reconfigure my office so I can flip my desk around to look out the window instead of sitting with my back to it.  Center City Philadelphia may not be as calm and peaceful as my backyard, but after the Milton-in-Office-Space shuffling I experienced at my last office job, I greatly appreciate having a view.

Onto the writerly update:

40200 / 118000
(34.07%)

About 3,000 words further in the last two weeks.  Meh.  But I finished the rewrite of chapter 12, chapter 13 was already done as a result of all the chapter splitting and shuffling I did a few weeks ago, and chapter 14 is coming along nicely, I think.

I've been surprised to find out how much I enjoy writing the political intrigue and manipulation aspects of this story.  Whether I'm any good at it remains to be seen, but those parts have been the most fun to work on.  When I started the first version of this novel several years ago, I expected it to be more of a Big Epic Questy Thing with Kick-Ass Sword Fights type story.  But then it started to morph, particularly when someone who began as a supporting character wormed his way into becoming co-protagonist along with my initial main character.  So there's still some questy-ness to the story, and there are still sword fights, but with the co-protagonist came a lot more political intrigue (and sex) than I had planned on.  It's made for a far more interesting story, so I'm glad he charmed his way into securing a larger role.

Now if only I could come up with a decent title for the damn thing.  I likely mentioned in a post way back when that the novel was originally called Prophecy's Sons.  My Big Honking Rewrite Idea, however, involved axing the prophecy.  Jettisoning that pesky prophecy was probably the best thing I could have done for this story, but it does leave me in need of a new title.  I was hoping I'd come up with a new one by this point in the rewrite, but no such luck.  Often, potential titles will leap out at me early on in writing something.  But when they don't, I have the hardest dang time coming up with one.  Earlier today I jotted down a list of words tied to themes and plot points in the novel and stared at it in the hopes of coming up with something, but no such luck.  I know it's not the end of the world if I don't come up with a title in the near future, but I find having a title comforting when writing.  Not having one leaves me antsy, like if I'm missing the title, then what else am I missing about the story?

From suck to sick

Stupid cold.  I could still be a functional human being if it was only the sniffling and sneezing, but the accompanying headache had me curled up in bed for a good chunk of today.  The headache's eased up for now--this is the first time I've been able to look at the computer for more than a few minutes without my eyes crossing--but it's been coming and going so much since yesterday that I fear it'll return.

The Writerly Update
Now that I've looked at my word count progress, I wish that I hadn't.  Only 1,600 words in the last 3 weeks.  Ugh.  I didn't expect great progress since my writing time recently has mostly been limited to my 20-minute morning train ride, but I didn't think it'd be that pathetic. I did finish rewriting the first scene in chapter 12 yesterday, at least.

37300 / 118000
(31.61%)

The Readerly Update
The only advantage to my cold is that I had an excuse to sit down with some soup and a book and read for a couple hours today since, unlike the computer, that didn't make my headache worse.  I finished On Killing.  Overall, a fascinating read that I'd recommend...except for the last section, which derailed into what I felt was a flawed look at the effects of violence in movies and video games.  The book was best when it focused on the effects of killing in military combat, and it gave me a lot to think about in that regard, so still worth the read despite its final detour.

All of my reading for the last several months has been either non-fiction or short stories, so in deciding what to read next, I thought I'd go with a novel for a change of pace and grabbed The Silver Bough by Lisa Tuttle off my to-read shelf. Onward...

Beware the ides of March...and the rest of the month while you're at it

So, last week?  It sucked a lot.  No writing time over the weekend?  Also sucked.  And rain and wind strong enough to knock over a big-ass pine tree and street light in the neighborhood when you're trying to move large pieces of furniture?  Yeah, that sucks too.

The Writerly Update
Close to 600 words into what is now chapter 12.  More revision wordage would have been nice, but considering the aforementioned suck, I’m amazed I got that much.

The Readerly Update
I’ve been reading On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society by Lt. Colonel Dave Grossman, which has some really fascinating (and sometimes disturbing) stuff in it.  I put it on my “to read” list after [livejournal.com profile] j_cheney had posted about it some time back.  It sounded like it’d be a good resource for a short story I’ve been planning to rewrite, and it’s delivering on that front.  What I didn’t realize was how useful it’d be for my novel rewrite as well.

Submission Land
I don’t think I’ve ever had this many submissions out at the 100-day+ mark all at one time before.  Luckily, working on the novel rewrite instead of a short stories at present has me obsessing over this less than I normally would.

Random Literary/Theatrical Musings
I saw a production of Romeo & Juliet Thursday night.  It’s been a while since I’ve read it or seen it performed, and the production made me realize why, unlike a lot of other Shakespeare, I don’t love this play.  Two things in particular: 1) The supporting characters are far more interesting than the protagonists.  I spend most of the play wanting to slap them.  2) After Romeo and Juliet have bit it and brought their angsty histrionics to an end, we have this moment where the friar stands there in the tomb telling the other characters everything we just saw happen.  "As You Know, Audience..."

Reconstructive Novel Surgery with Dr. Barnett

Monday's almost here again already?  Seriously, weekend, WTF?  I thought we were getting along.  Or is that what the migraine was about this morning?  You needing your space?

The Writerly Update

I had a good deal of time to spend on the novel revisions this weekend, which was nice, though it felt more like reconstructive surgery than it did writing.  Saturday I finished figuring out how I could tackle the mess that is chapter 10, but something about the chapter still didn't seem right.  I finally realized that the weird pacing and disconnect between scenes was simply a matter of packing too much in--this Plot A stuff needed to happen in separate chapters with some Plot B in between.  So I spent this afternoon figuring out how to rearrange things in a way that moved the story along better yet still made dramatic sense.  And by gosh golly goshums, I think I did it.  After some splitting and shifting, chapter 10 is now chapter 12 and 14, chapter 13 is what was originally the latter half of chapter 9 and is therefore done already, and chapter 8 is no longer the hugely long beast it was, because now it's chapter 8 and 10.

Yes, there was an insanely anal-retentive diagram involved in figuring all that out.  Why do you ask?

A Writerly Pet Peeve

Here's something I hate: I'm taking a look through Ralan's and Duotrope's and spy a new publication with decent pay rates, so I check out their website and . . . they offer no clue as to who the hell is publishing this thing.  Or worse yet, they list their editorial staff using what amounts to screen names.  Sorry, no.  You want to know who I am when I submit a piece?  That's fine, but it's only fair that I know who you are too, and DragonElf isn't going to cut it.

The overdue writerly update

So, this is supposed to be a writing journal or something.  I should probably return you all to your regularly scheduled programming.

Novel Land
Sloooooow progress on the novel last week.  I squeezed in what time I could, but it just wasn't enough to finish the current chapter despite being so close to the end of it.  Hopefully I can get some extra non-train ride writing time in tonight and this weekend, because I'm having fun with this story right now.  It's awesome how much things have improved after giving one secondary character a personality transplant.  Too bad I still need to kill him.

Workshop Land
So, Odfellows on the flist: who else is doing TNEO this summer?  The good news is that I'm going this year.  The bad news is that it's only because we have to take two-week furloughs at work.

Submission Land
And I've reached the 25-day mark with a submission at F&SF.  What are the odds of two stories in a row getting lost in the mail?  Because that would suck.

The Writerly Update: Snowpocalypse Edition

Normally, I hate snow unless I'm on skis.  And since I haven't been skiing in years, that means I haven't liked snow in years.

Yet I have to give a small amount of thanks to this past weekend's Snowpocalypse.  I didn't enjoy the shoveling and the resulting achy back, and I'll be cranky until this stuff melts, but because I was snowed out of the weekend's scheduled activities, a beautiful thing occurred: I sat there with my computer on my lap for several hours and put in some quality writing time.  Saturday I finished a requested short story rewrite and shipped it off.   Sunday I got in some work on the novel, and as a result:

31200 / 118000
(26.44%)

Chapter 8 is almost done and will be much shorter than its original bloated self. I haven't had that much writing time on my hands in a while, and it was great.

On the Submission Land front, you know what's getting really frustrating?  Having fantasy stories rejected by some markets for being too traditional while others reject them for not being traditional enough.  Too little sword in my sorcery here, too much sword in my sorcery there.  Do I really drive down the middle of the road that consistently with my fantasy?  Because that's depressing.

Resurfacing for an LJ post-pourri

Fell off the face of the LJ planet for a bit there.  I just tried to catch up on my flist but quickly realized how laughable that was if I wanted to get anything else done this afternoon.  So I hope I didn't miss anything too terribly exciting.

Pimpage
The Best of Every Day Fiction Two, which includes my story "Monkey Love," is now available for purchase.

Injury Update
The foot injury from last week is amazingly improved.  Given how much it hurt last Thursday, I was quite surprised how much better it felt the very next day.  I even survived lots of walking around New York last weekend (tangent: so glad I had the chance to see Angela Lansbury on stage, for the awesome is strong with her).  The foot's a little twingy sometimes, and it'll probably be another week before I consider doing any serious exercise or wearing heels again, but I'm relieved it hasn't turned into the Injury Drama I feared it would.

The Writerly Update
I've been finding it hard to post lately.  A lot of that has to do with being insanely busy, but a lot also has to do with a general feeling of demoralization on the non-writing side of writing.  I was tempted to whine about it, but then a silly little fortune cookie of all things gave me a proper bitch-slapping yesterday:

Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.

Enthusiasm for writing I've still got, particularly with the novel rewrite.  Speaking of:

29200 / 118000
(24.75%)

I got about another 2,000 words into chapter 8 over the past week or so.  Considering how limited my writing time has been recently, that's not too shabby at all for me.  And given the nature of the revisions, progress isn't just about the wordage.  I didn't add many new words yesterday, but I did a whole mess of figuring out how to tackle the rest of this chapter--what can be cut, what should be moved, what needs to be added or completely rewritten.  The cutting and streamlining feels particularly good.  This chapter started out rather long and was a bit slow in parts, so I think (hope) trimming it down is going to make for a much tighter and better-paced read.

And to two characters in particular, I just want to say: THANK YOU. For finally talking to me, that is. See how much better everything is when you open up a little and let me know what's going on inside your heads? You two gave me so much trouble in earlier drafts, and a lot of people didn't like you because of it.  But now?  Well, it'll be some time before anyone reads the rewrite, but I think both of you stand a far better chance of winning people over now.

The writerly update, and an unrelated moment of WTF

The Writerly Update
I haven't had much time for writing at home recently, but my new routine with the new job is to spend the train ride to work writing and the train ride home reading, so I'm at least squeezing in a little bit every day.  I started out doing the reading in the morning and the writing on the way home, but I've found that it's better to do the writing before I've fried my brain trying to meet grant deadlines at work.  And reading on the way home has turned out to be a good way to let the brain recharge while I enter this pleasant little "let someone else bend the English language to his/her will for these next 20 minutes" zone.

Strangely enough, I feel like I'm finally making progress on this dang novel chapter even though I've been clocking in less writing time.  It's slow progress, but it's definitely progress, so I'll take it. At present, I've got about 2,200 words of chapter 5 revised and only one more scene to finish.  Then I take a break from the novel and write a short story.

The Unrelated Moment of WTF
Now that I'm working in an office building again and get to experience this stuff:  what can possibly be so important that a person needs to talk on her cell phone while going to the bathroom?  The girl managed to do her business and even wash her hands while yapping, but didn't bother to flush.  So I made sure I did during her phone call.  Twice.
