Can't talk, I'm checking Duotrope's

It occurs to me that I may be entirely too obsessive.  It's a good trait to have when your day job involves a constant stream of deadlines for grant proposals and reports and people wanting to know when you're going to hear back on the proposal you only just sent five seconds ago.  But as a writer tossing short stories out into Submission Land…[Poll #1653193]

I check my gmail for records as well as Duo. As for querying - never, unless I see that I am a) the oldest sub on duo, b) sub is in the red, and c) the market is responding to much younger submissions. I have queried three times under these circumstances, and all three times my sub had been lost or misplaced.

well considering i only have 2 subs out there and both are over the time frame stated by the auto-reply email, THIS MIGHT MEAN SOMETHING (ETA -im pretty sure it means i got lost in translation somewhere lol)

:)

any word on the zombie anthology?

I think that's a good system for when to query.

Jason Sizemore's Twitter says he's read everything up through Oct. 29 for the antho. I subbed on Oct. 18 and haven't heard anything yet, so fingers crossed. Of course, since idiot me had forgotten to attach the dang story, it's always possible that bumped me to the end of the reading pile. :)

Maybe THIS is why I don't do shorts!

Come on over to the short side of Force, Terri. We have cookies.

Delicious, chocolate chip cookies.

I unfortunately lost who made it to give them credit, but it is most definitely one of my favorite icons. :)

You are a cruel and tricksy writer.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who has a problem.

[identity profile] babarnett.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the compliment.

*waves cookie and grins evilly*

:)

Oh, I suspect that many of us do. :)

....no one ever gives me cookies. Ten years on the short side and I've never gotten a cookie. ::pouts::

[identity profile] stillnotbored.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I do need to qualify that in my early days of subbing I might have checked email every oh...let me see...hour? Because I just knew editors would recognize my brilliance and rush to get back to me.

Right.

After ten years of sending out subs, I tend to forget stories are out in the wild. Color me old and cynical.

[identity profile] babarnett.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
What!? The Cookie Denial Complaint Committee shall hear of this!

[identity profile] babarnett.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Consider yourself colored old and cynical. :p

For me, it often depends on the story. Some I'm so sick of submitting that I'm in no hurry to hear back on them, so they're easy to shoot off and forget about. But when they're new and shiny, I tend to obsess just a wee little bit.

btw, I got my zombie antho rejection this last week. I subbed 10/24.

I *used* to obsessively watch Duo, but I've broken that spell. Until it gets close to their reported response time, and then I check it every few days.

[identity profile] babarnett.livejournal.com 2010-12-05 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Bummer about the zombie rejection. :(

My level of Duotrope's obsessiveness usually varies depending on what I have out where and what else is going on with my day. On a long, slow work day, I'll check Duotrope's obsessively. This weekend, though, I took maybe the quickest of glances and that was it.
